In conjunction with Dr. Mike Herman from Kansas State University there are possibilities for undergraduate students trainee periods at the new Master of Science in Integrative Genomics at Black Hills State University. It is located in Spearfish, South Dakota, the hub of the Northern Black Hills, a native Indian area. It is run by Dr. Dave Siemens (former Mitchell-Olds postdoc). The Black Hills provide a unique natural laboratory for Integrative Genomics. They are also close to the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at Homestake Mine, allowing for collaboration with other major universities (to study, for example, the meta-genomics of the unique microbial communities found in extreme environments).
